Nail Surgery Redressing

Comprehensive Redressing Advice Following Nail Surgery

At Same Day Podiatry, we prioritize your recovery after nail surgery and want to ensure you have all the necessary information for a smooth healing process. Below are detailed instructions on how to care for your toe, manage the dressing, and recognize signs of potential complications.

Initial Dressing Care

After your nail surgery, you will have a dressing applied to protect the treated area. It’s crucial to keep this dressing on for three days. This initial period is vital for protecting the surgical site from infection and promoting healing. Avoid getting the dressing wet during this time.

Daily Care Instructions

After the first three days, please follow these steps:

  1. Salt Water Bath: Begin by soaking your toe in a warm saltwater solution (a teaspoon of salt in a bowl of warm water) for about 10 to 15 minutes. This bath will help cleanse the area, promote healing, and reduce the risk of infection. It is best to do this once a day.

  2. Drying and Dressing: After the soak, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Apply a small, sterile, dry dressing to the toe. It’s important to use sterile materials to minimize the risk of infection.

  3. Daily Changes: Change the dressing daily. This helps keep the area clean and allows you to monitor for any changes or complications.

  4. Duration: Continue this routine for 6 to 8 weeks or until your podiatrist advises you otherwise. Consistent care during this period is essential for optimal healing.

Signs and Symptoms of Infection

While infection is a rare complication, it is important to be vigilant. Please watch for the following signs and symptoms:

  • Increased Pain: While some discomfort is expected, a sudden increase in pain may indicate an issue.

  • Swelling and Redness: Some swelling is normal, but if you notice increased redness or swelling around the surgical site that spreads, this may be a cause for concern.

  • Discharge: Look for any unusual discharge from the site. A small amount of clear fluid is normal, but any pus (yellow or green) or foul-smelling discharge could indicate an infection.

  • Fever: A fever higher than 100.4°F (38°C) can be a sign of infection and should be reported to your healthcare provider.
